Murray’s releases the champagne of Australian ales

Murray’s Anniversary Ale is an American-style barley wine with the unique addition of wheat. It is designed to improve with age – for up to 10 years – and is made only once a year to celebrate the anniversary of the internationally-awarded brewery’s opening in December 2005.

“Making Murray’s Anniversary Ale 2 has been the highlight of our brewing year,” says brewer Shawn Sherlock. “Crafting big beers like this is what keeps us passionate about brewing in general, and the Anniversary Ale is truly the mother of Australian ales.”

Murray’s Anniversary Ale 2 has a strong malt backbone with caramel/toffee notes balanced by aggressive hop flavour and subtle oakiness. Half the batch was fermented with a Belgian yeast before transferring to the shiraz casks for a month. It will then be blended with the second half, fermented with an English yeast, before bottling. Most popular beers are fermented for only 1-2 weeks.

“The oak and yeast blend for this year’s Anniversary Ale is definitely producing some great results and will result in an even more complex beer than last year’s edition,” says Sherlock.

With an alcohol content of 10% by volume, Murray’s Anniversary Ale 2 is intended to be sipped, not skulled. Only 1000 bottles have been brewed.

“This is a beer that should be savoured like a special wine. It is not for everyone but it’s made because we love it. We’re confident fellow beer lovers and adventurous wine connoisseurs will delight in an ale that’s world class, locally brewed, and very different,” says passionate craft beer enthusiast and brewery owner Murray Howe.

“Last year’s inaugural release sold out fast so be quick to secure something special,” he added.

Murray’s Anniversary Ale 2, corked, caged and sold in 750ml champagne bottles for a RRP of $30, will be available in December from select premium retail outlets or online at http://www.murraysbrewingco.com.au/.

Tasting Notes

Murray’s Anniversary Ale 2

An extreme beer. A strong malt backbone with lingering caramel/toffee notes is balanced by the assertive bitterness, aggressive hop flavour and subtle oakiness. Half the batch has been fermented with a Belgian yeast then conditioned in old shiraz oak casks for a month. The second half has been fermented with a normal ale yeast and the two blended together before bottling. The result is a complex ale with a subtle but evident oak flavour and aroma.
